This month I will be participating in my second Kalos course on April 16-18 in the Seattle area. The first time I was the student and now I am learning to assist and teach this wonderful healing system to others. You can find out more about Kalos and the upcoming course at www.inlightenwellness.com.
I have noticed that many times in my life I have stepped forward to teach what I was also in the process of learning. This may sound counter to what most people expect of their teachers, we want them to be perfect, to know everything there is to know about whatever subject we are teaching. There is nothing wrong with wanting your teacher to be proficient in the subject they are teaching, I want the same.
However, I have noticed that when the teacher is also engaged in learning there is something magical that occurs. When the teacher is flowing with the energy of the students and the subject they are in tune with the moment, they are open to newness and magic.
Have you ever taken a course from a teacher that was so bored with their own subject that they almost fell asleep along with the students? I have and I am here to tell you there was nothing magical in the words that were spoken or the subject being taught. I went in with great expectations of learning and left empty.
When the teacher is willing to also be the student of their class then they are open to new experiences, new insights and new possibilities. This is the kind of teaching and learning that I prefer and quite frankly, it is the way I teach all of the courses I teach. I want to learn from my students as they learn from me, there is a synergy that happens and I find the students learn more and with greater enthusiasm.
As I learn from my students my subject gains depth and heart, I am no longer teaching a subject but I am teaching an art, I am engaged in the exploration of both the information and the experience of teaching and learning at the same time.
Maybe it is in the minor imperfections of the teacher and in their willingness to step forward in teaching that great teachers are born.
